The American Automobile Association (AAA) says that the Summer of 2025 has been great for travel, and Labor Day weekend should be no exception as many Americans are squeezing in one final trip before summer ends.
Summer gas prices this year have stayed low, aligning with the summer averages of 2021. On Labor Day last year, the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline was $3.33. Unless a tropical storm or hurricane disrupts Gulf Coast refineries, gas prices are expected to remain below last year’s level. Throughout 2025, gas prices have remained relatively stable due to consistent crude oil prices.
INRIX, a transportation data and insights provider, recommends driving before lunchtime over Labor Day weekend for optimal traffic conditions. For those traveling on Saturday, it’s best to start as early as possible, as traffic congestion tends to increase throughout the day. The most challenging times to drive during the holiday weekend are generally in the afternoon and early evening. Saturday is anticipated to be particularly busy with many drivers leaving town or going on day trips.
