The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has provided key updates regarding the Moving Florida Forward Infrastructure Initiative. Here are the anticipated construction schedules for these specific projects: I-4 from Champions Gate to Osceola Parkway, I-4 at State Road 33 Interchange, and I-4 from U.S. 27 to Champions Gate.

The Moving Florida Forward Infrastructure Initiative will expedite crucial infrastructure projects throughout the state by allocating $4 billion from the General Revenue Surplus, commencing in the 2023-2024 budget year. These projects aim to tackle congestion, enhance safety, fortify the transportation system’s resilience, boost the supply chain and economic development, and accommodate future requirements as the state undergoes rapid growth.

I-4 from ChampionsGate to Osceola Parkway:

This project involves the reconstruction of Interstate 4 to include three general use lanes, auxiliary lanes, and two special use lanes in both the eastbound and westbound directions, spanning from west of County Road (C.R.) 532 / ChampionsGate to east of C.R. 522 / Osceola Parkway. The scope also includes the reconstruction of existing interchanges. Construction is set to commence in late 2024.

I-4 at State Road (S.R.) 33 Interchange:

The I-4 at S.R. 33 interchange is situated in the City of Lakeland, in the northwest area of Polk County. Currently, it features a rural diamond interchange setup with single-lane on- and off-ramps and two unsignalized ramp terminal intersections. This project involves interchange modifications, the expansion of lanes on S.R. 33 from Old Combee Road to North Tomkow Road, and enhancements to wildlife crossings. Construction is set to commence in late 2024.

I-4 from U.S. 27 to ChampionsGate:

This project involves the reconstruction of Interstate 4 to include three general-use lanes, auxiliary lanes, and two special-use lanes in both the eastbound and westbound directions, spanning from west of U.S. 27 to west of County Road (C.R.) 532 / ChampionsGate. Construction is scheduled to commence in the Fall of 2026.

“These projects will be transformational for Central Florida residents and visitors who rely on Interstate 4 every day,” said FDOT District Five Secretary John Tyler. “In fast-growing Osceola County, rebuilding the interstate and adding I-4 Express lanes will substantially improve safety and travel time in one of the most congested segments of I-4.”

“Through the Moving Florida Forward initiative, we embark on a historic journey, where FDOT’s projects on I-4 from U.S. 27 to ChampionsGate and the I-4 at S.R. 33 Interchange promise to transform not just our transportation industry, but the very quality of life for Floridians and visitors alike.” said L.K. Nandam, FDOT District One Secretary.

As construction kicks off on projects statewide, it’s crucial for motorists to exercise caution and reduce speed when driving through work zones. Our top priority is ensuring the safety of everyone, including our dedicated workers, as they head home.
