The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) announces the activation of a redesigned ramp system at the I-4 and Sand Lake Road (State Road 482) interchange, scheduled for Saturday, May 2. This strategic reconfiguration provides westbound I-4 and westbound Sand Lake Road travelers with streamlined access to Turkey Lake Road, significantly bolstering safety and alleviating congestion at one of Central Florida’s highest-volume interchanges.
The existing left-turn maneuver from westbound Sand Lake Road onto southbound Turkey Lake Road— a primary contributor to recurrent delays—will be supplanted by a dedicated loop ramp. Westbound Sand Lake Road motorists can now utilize this ramp to access both northbound and southbound Turkey Lake Road directions. Additionally, the upgraded system enables direct exits from westbound I-4 at Exit 74A to either Turkey Lake Road or Sand Lake Road.
Navigation from Westbound Sand Lake Road to Turkey Lake Road
- To reach Turkey Lake Road south of Sand Lake Road, maintain the right lane and enter the new loop ramp immediately prior to the Turkey Lake Road intersection.
- The loop ramp traverses Sand Lake Road, terminating at Sand Lake Sound Road, from which travelers may proceed north or south on Turkey Lake Road.
- Post-activation, left turns from westbound Sand Lake Road to southbound Turkey Lake Road will be prohibited.
Navigation from Westbound I-4 (Exit 74A)
- Exit 74A’s westbound I-4 ramp bifurcates into dual lanes: the right fork directs to Sand Lake Road, while the left provides direct access to Turkey Lake Road.
- Those exiting to Sand Lake Road may still reach Turkey Lake Road by turning right onto westbound Sand Lake Road and utilizing the new loop ramp.
This development represents a pivotal advancement in the comprehensive overhaul of the I-4/Sand Lake Road interchange, which accommodates approximately 115,000 vehicles daily. In March 2024, FDOT implemented a diverging diamond interchange (DDI) configuration—a proven engineering solution that enhances throughput, safety, and operational efficiency by reallocating Sand Lake Road traffic to the contraflow side and obviating conflict-prone left turns onto I-4. The overarching project, initiated in 2023, is slated for completion in 2027.
These progressive enhancements will sustain improvements in roadway safety and capacity, mitigating congestion to enable expeditious travel to proximate attractions, hospitality venues, dining establishments, commercial districts, and residential communities—solidifying this corridor as a premier entryway to Central Florida.
FDOT urges all motorists to exercise heightened vigilance, adhere to updated signage and pavement delineations, and anticipate transitional adjustments to the revised alignment. Project timelines remain subject to modification owing to meteorological conditions or unforeseen variables.
This initiative forms an integral component of the broader reconstruction effort to transform the I-4/Sand Lake Road interchange into a fully operational diverging diamond interchange (DDI) while extending the I-4 Express managed lanes.
